Odds of Living to 90
A 65-year-old American man has a 24.1% chance of living to 90, and a 65-year-old woman 34.9%, according to the SSA 2023 period life table, 2026 Trustees Report.
Living to 90 is a realistic planning scenario rather than a long shot. At 2023 death rates, 19.1% of baby boys and 30.5% of baby girls would reach 90.

Men have a better-than-even chance of reaching 90 from age 85 onward (53.7% at 85). Women have a better-than-even chance of reaching 90 from age 82 onward (51.6% at 82).
How the odds are calculated
A period life table follows an imaginary group of 100,000 newborns through the death rates observed in one year (2023 here). The survivors column, l(x), says how many are still alive at each exact age. The chance of reaching 90 from any current age is a single division:
Men, x = 65: 19,063 ÷ 79,084 = 24.1%
Women, x = 65: 30,504 ÷ 87,399 = 34.9%
Financial planners often use survival odds like these to choose a planning horizon. If a 65-year-old couple (one man, one woman) were independent, the chance that at least one of them reaches 90 would be 1 − (1 − 24.1%) × (1 − 34.9%) = 50.6%. Real couples share lifestyles and environment, so treat this as a rough guide.
What age should I plan to?
For retirement planning, the average is the wrong target: about half of people outlive it. Planners usually pick an age that only a minority will pass. In a review of more than 31,000 financial plans, David Blanchett found that 70% used 90 as the target age and another 20% used 95, and few allowed for the longer horizon a couple needs (AARP, 2022).
| Chance of living past this age | Man aged 65 | Woman aged 65 | At least one of a 65-year-old couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% (median) | 83.8 | 86.6 | 90.1 |
| 25% (1 in 4) | 89.8 | 92.2 | 94.3 |
| 10% (1 in 10) | 94.2 | 96.5 | 97.7 |
A plan that ends at 90 leaves a 24.1% chance that a 65-year-old man outlives it, a 34.9% chance for a woman, and a 50.6% chance that at least one member of a 65-year-old couple does. Real couples share habits and surroundings, so treat the couple figures as a rough guide. To see how these horizons affect your savings, try the retirement savings lifespan calculator.
Period odds vs your real odds
These are period figures: they assume 2023 death rates apply for the rest of your life. If death rates keep falling, as they have over most past decades, people alive today would do somewhat better than the table suggests. The figures are also averages for the whole population, healthy or not, so your own odds depend heavily on your health and habits.
Frequently asked questions
What are the odds of living to 90?
It depends on your current age and sex. At birth, the odds are 19.1% for boys and 30.5% for girls. At 65 they are 24.1% for men and 34.9% for women (SSA 2023 period life table, 2026 Trustees Report).
How are the odds of living to 90 calculated?
Divide the number of survivors at age 90 by the number alive at your current age in the life table: P = l(90) ÷ l(current age). For a 65-year-old man that is 19,063 ÷ 79,084 = 24.1%.
Why do my odds of reaching 90 go up as I get older?
Every year you survive removes a year of risk from the calculation. A 75-year-old man has a 30.4% chance of reaching 90, compared with 24.1% at 65, because he has already outlived the people who died between 65 and 75.
Do women have better odds of living to 90?
Yes. At 65, a woman's chance of reaching 90 is 1.45 times a man's in the SSA table (34.9% vs 24.1%).
What age should I plan to for retirement?
Many planners use 90 or 95: in a review of more than 31,000 financial plans, 70% used 90 and 20% used 95 (David Blanchett, reported by AARP). In the SSA 2023 table, a 65-year-old man has a 25% chance of living past 89.8 and a 10% chance of living past 94.2; for a woman the ages are 92.2 and 96.5. A couple needs a longer horizon, because the plan has to last until the second death.

Remaining life expectancy e(x) and survivors l(x) are taken directly from the SSA table (captured 2026-10-19). Survival odds are computed as l(target age) ÷ l(current age). Median ages are interpolated linearly between whole years of the l(x) column. See our methodology for how the personalised calculator builds on these baselines.
