Period vs cohort life expectancy

Period life expectancy is the number in this table. It answers: if the death rates of 2023 stayed fixed forever, how many more years would a person of this age live on average? It is a snapshot of current mortality, which makes it easy to compare across years and countries.

Cohort life expectancy follows a real generation, for example everyone born in 1960, and uses the death rates that generation actually experienced or is projected to experience as it ages. When mortality improves over time, cohort figures are higher than period figures, because people benefit from medical and social progress during their lifetimes.

That is why the same person can see different numbers in different places. Period values are the right choice for comparing ages and sexes on one footing, as this page does. Cohort projections are used for long-range planning, such as pensions. Neither is a personal forecast.

Why expected age at death rises with age

A newborn boy's expected age at death is 75.8, but a 65-year-old man's is 83.1 and a 90-year-old man's is 94.1. Each birthday you pass removes the risk of dying before it, so the remaining average is computed only over survivors.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average life expectancy in the US by age?

At birth, the SSA 2023 period life table gives 75.8 years for males and 81.1 for females. At 65, men have 18.1 years left on average and women 20.7. At 80, the figures are 8.5 and 9.8.

What is the difference between period and cohort life expectancy?

Period life expectancy applies one year's death rates (here 2023) to a person's whole remaining life. Cohort life expectancy follows people born in the same year and uses the death rates they are projected to face as they age, so if mortality keeps improving it is usually higher than the period figure.

Why does expected age at death rise as you get older?

Because survivors have already avoided the risks that ended other lives. A newborn boy's expected age at death is 75.8, but a 65-year-old man's is 83.1 and an 85-year-old man's is 91.0.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the Social Security Administration's Actuarial Life Table (2023 period table, used in the 2026 Trustees Report), which covers the Social Security area population. The table is a US federal work in the public domain.

Remaining life expectancy e(x) and survivors l(x) are taken directly from the SSA table (captured 2026-10-19). Survival odds are computed as l(target age) ÷ l(current age). Median ages are interpolated linearly between whole years of the l(x) column. See our methodology for how the personalised calculator builds on these baselines.
